HISTORY

HOW WE GOT HERE

In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic ground our community to a halt. This devastating experience offered a unique opportunity to step back and re-examine the activity we love. In July 2020 our founder put a public call out on Twitter for community members interested in addressing equity and safety in marching arts to reimagine our future when it would be safe to be together again. Several community members responded and our first group of core members was created. This group assembled the first iteration of our Operating Procedures document which defines our mission, vision, values, structure, roles, and membership expectations. Like in the beginning, MAASIN maintains all community members willing to commit to upholding the MAASIN mission, vision, and values are welcome to join. For more information on joining please see our Join MAASIN page.

Since summer 2020 MAASIN has evolved to shift our structure in directions that meet our needs as an organization and community. Our most current committees can be found on our Structure & Projects page. We have refined our programming into educational events such as workshops, discussion circles, and town halls. We also provide support programming such as guidance for marginalized community members who are looking for employment in marching arts, the March With Pride Scholarship for LGBTQIA+ performers, and our staple PROSPER Program to assist community members, ensembles, and organizations in addressing and preventing misconduct. All MAASIN programming is free with the exception of private workshop bookings which are available for a sliding scale price based on the resources of your organization. To learn more please visit our Workshops page.

We seek to continuously reflect and change as people and an organization to do right by the community. If you have any questions about anything about us please feel free to reach out at secretary@maasin.net, by DM on any of our social media accounts, or by using the form on our Contact page.
